03:01 pm - Quilt Festival Entry - Heighway Dragon
Let me pretend this is a real blog, and post an entry for the Blogger's Quilt Festival.
I finished up my dragon curve quilt, almost a year ago, with newborn George sleeping on my lap. It felt anticlimactic at the time, because I'd spent weeks with the quilt knocking around the kitchen while I sewed the binding down.
What's new for me about the quilt is that from seeing the image, through the piecing stage, there were no decisions to be made. I had a vision of what it was to look like, and that was pretty much that. My process stumbled a bit over quilting it - there's a rotated copy of the original picked out only in the quilting, which doesn't read very well from a distance. Then I picked out a regular version of pebbling that proved to be rather labor-intensive, to fill in the gaps.
The underlying pattern, the Heighway dragon is a well known mathematical object; lots of good explanations are out there as to how to draw it, and what it's properties are. Mine has 256 triangles, which finish to 1 1/2 inches, each. Despite having lots of other quilts I want to make, I'm still dreaming of making one that's actually bed-sized, with perhaps twice as many triangles.
